A trend has
emerged across Malaysia that has people, young and old, taking to online job
posting sites to take up ‘translation jobs’. These jobs are looking for people
who can help translate documents from Malay to other languages, usually English.
Many
companies in the USA, and around the world, are looking for translators to
translate simple documents online, such as emails, website content, movie
subtitles and more. The companies are looking for fluent speakers who ideally
have Malay as their first language. It’s part of a larger trend where companies
form all over the world are seeking to remain competitive in a world economy
that is becoming ever more globalized. Companies want to ensure their website,
marketing material, and more is easily accessed by people around the globe,
with Malaysia playing a big role.
Companies like Real Translator Jobs are actively seeking translators
from Malaysia to fill demand. Here you can see individual postings or requests
for translation services, including the type of posting, the length of the
document and the rate of pay the purchaser is willing to pay for the services.
Another company, One Hour Translation,
now boasts over 15,000 translators in 120 countries working for on the website,
translating between more than 2,500 language pairs (all the combinations of the
75 languages OHT handles). OHT will do translations (single page, up to 200
words) in an hour or less, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
In an era marked by increased globalization, the
translation market around the world is huge, as businesses seek to grab
whatever markets they can wherever they can find them. The largest translation
firm in the world in 2012 was Mission Essential Personnel, which does all the
translations for the U.S. military; it had revenues of over $700 million (OHT
did not disclose revenue or sales figures). According to marketing research
firm Common Sense Advisory, the world market for translations in 2012 was
